Blue Jays bolster catching depth,DFA Serven
The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed catcher Tyler Heineman off waivers from the Texas Rangers.
Heineman, 31, has appeared in parts of seven major league seasons with the Marlins, Nationals, Rays, and Rangers. He boasts a career .240/.304/.366 slash line, with 19 home runs and 103 RBIs in 338 games.
Heineman provides Blue Jays with a veteran catching option
He is expected to provide depth to the Blue Jays' catching corps, which includes Danny Jansen and Gabriel Moreno.
Heineman is known for his strong defense and leadership qualities. He has a .988 career fielding percentage and has thrown out 22% of attempted base stealers. He is also a respected clubhouse presence and a good mentor for younger players.
Serven designated for assignment
To make room for Heineman on the roster, the Blue Jays have designated catcher Brian Serven for assignment.
Serven, 29, has spent the past three seasons with the Blue Jays. He has a .222/.302/.378 slash line with 5 home runs and 24 RBIs in 123 games.
Blue Jays in need of catching depth
The Blue Jays have been looking to add depth to their catching position for some time. Jansen has been battling injuries, and Moreno is still relatively inexperienced.
Heineman provides the Blue Jays with a veteran catcher who can fill in behind Jansen and Moreno. He is a solid defender and can provide some pop at the plate.
Waiver wire pickup could prove valuable
The Blue Jays are hoping that Heineman can be a valuable addition to their team. He is a proven major league catcher who can provide depth and leadership.
The Blue Jays are currently in a playoff race, and every little bit helps. Heineman could be the piece that helps them get over the top.
