Rafael Nadal Loses to Alexander Zverev at Roland Garros
Nadal Falls in Semi-Finals Despite Mid-Match Resurgence
Zverev Claims Historic Victory on Court Philippe-Chatrier
PARIS - In a thrilling semi-final clash at the French Open, Alexander Zverev stunned 14-time champion Rafael Nadal to secure a spot in the tournament's final. Despite facing a mid-match surge from Nadal, Zverev held his nerve to emerge victorious in five sets (7-6(8), 6-6(retired)) on Monday.
Nadal, who was seeking his record-extending 15th Roland Garros title, found himself in an early deficit as Zverev broke his serve twice in the first set. However, the Spaniard fought back to force a tiebreak, showcasing his trademark resilience. In a nail-biting tiebreak, Zverev prevailed 10-8 to take the first set.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with both players trading breaks. Nadal eventually held a 5-3 lead and appeared poised to level the match. However, Zverev once again displayed his impressive serve and groundstrokes to break back and force another tiebreak. They were tied at 6-6 when Zverev was forced to retire due to an ankle injury.
Nadal, visibly disappointed, expressed his admiration for Zverev's performance and wished him well in the final. The Spaniard also hinted at a potential return to Roland Garros next year, despite his recent injury woes. Zverev, meanwhile, celebrated his historic victory with a jubilant on-court interview, acknowledging the magnitude of his achievement.
